Something formed.
Mapped out.
More certain.
More… finished.

But most of what I’ve learned appeared only after I started.

Here are a few things that have been quietly reshaping how I work:

1. Clarity comes from movement, not thinking

You don’t think your way into creative clarity.
You make your way into it.

2. Your voice is built through repetition

Not discovered. Not unlocked.
Built.

Every piece adds a layer.

3. Consistency is a form of self-trust

Showing up regularly isn’t about discipline.
It’s about proving to yourself that you will return.

4. Not everything needs to be shared. Somethings should be

Private practice matters.
But sharing creates momentum, connection and reflection. I also find it’s where the biggest lessons are learned.

5. You’re allowed to begin without knowing where it leads

That might be the only honest way to begin.
Start for starting’s sake.

There’s something I’m starting to trust:

The path doesn’t appear ahead of you.
It appears underneath you.

In January 2024 I bailed after five days. January is not the time to be doing big new things. In fact, I normally do the opposite. Try to clear my plate of the non-essentials and dedicate a big chunk of time to resting and reflecting. What was I thinking?!

Towards the end of 2024 I noticed some posts popping up on Instagram about the challenge which would be hosted again in January.

Yes, I thought, I want to do this. Memories of the failed first attempt no where near the front of my mind, the side or the dusty old back. I think I might have archived that experience. Never mind, I’d made up my mind to have another go.

I didn’t do any preparation, like many do.

I did decided to create all the bird art digitally. To save money and time and to expand on my digital colouring skills and develop my style.

It was a calling. A need to create musically again. Playing that of others and creating our own.

We shared the view that making music in midlife was less about making it to the top and more about feeling fulfilled. It gave us a freedom to release perfection and worry less about how it would be received. Creating more space for the joy of creating.

We are both super busy lifeing and it’s hard to commit to more than once a week or every two weeks. But. We are devoted. Heart and all.

This was from a little unplugged (no mics and only one lead) session we had today.
